Unleashing God’s Word In Your Life: The Word Sets You Free (Part 11)
Unleashing God’s Word In Your Life
Lesson 11—The Word Sets You Free
Text: John 8:30-37
- We gain freedom as we immerse ourselves in the truths of God’s Word
- In our text we see Jews who believed (30), but it was a shallow that would not save them
- Jesus wanted to take them from their belief to salvation
- The Progress of Freedom
- We must progress from “faith” to an “obedient faith” (31,32)
- “Even the demon’s believe—and tremble” (Jas. 2:19)
- “Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (Jas. 2:17)
- A true disciple is not just a hearer, but a doer as well (Jas. 1:22)
- The Pretense of Freedom
- The Jews listening to Jesus did not respond favorably—instead, they built a wall of self-righteousness (33)
- Jesus offered them freedom, but they didn’t need it, or Him
- Jesus explained their bondage, “Whoever commits sin is a slave of sin” (34)
- The Promise of Freedom
- True freedom is found only in the Son, not in slavery (35,36)
- Jesus offers the crowd of hostile Jews real truth and real freedom
- Do they accept? Sadly, no—they only seek to kill him (37)
- God has given us His truth in His Word—what we choose to do with it is up to us
- We must continue to hold on to the Word and to “abide” in it
- We must turn back to the Bible again and again to ground our-selves in Christ’s teaching, in the truth that can set us free
