Exodus 20—The Ten Commandments

While we do not live under the Law of Moses, in this list of commandments we find many eternal moral principles that are rooted in  the nature of God Himself and are consistent from covenant to covenant.

  1. “You shall have no other gods before me.” 
    1.  NT—Gal. 5:19-21; 1 Cor. 5:11; Col. 3:5.
  2. No carved image, or any likeness of anything
    1. NT—Rom. 1:23-25; Rev. 19:10; Ezek. 18:19,20.
  3. Not take the name of the Lord your God in vain” 
    1.  NT—Mt. 5:33-37; Jas. 5:12; Mk. 7:21-23; Mt. 10:28; Heb. 12:28,29.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day
    1. 7th day “rest”—The Sabbath is not and never has been Sunday.
    2. NT—Col. 2:14-16; Heb. 4:1,9,10.
  5. Honor your father and your mother” 
    1. NT—Eph. 6:1,2; Mt. 15:3-9.
  6. You shall not murder
    1. NT—Rom. 1:29; 1 Tim. 1:9,10; Rom. 1:32; 13:4; Acts 25:11
  7. You shall not commit adultery” 
    1. NT—Gal. 5:19-21; 1 Cor. 6:15-18; 2 Pet. 2:14.
  8. You shall not steal
    1. NT—Eph. 4:28
  9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
    1. NT—Rev. 21:8; Mt. 15:19; 1 Tim. 1:10
  10. You shall not covet” 
    1. NT—1 Tim. 6:10; Col. 3:5; 1 Tim. 6:5-9

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Col. 3:16)
