Our Forgiving God (Psalm 6)
God, in love and mercy, forgives the penitent.
Our Forgiving God (Psalm 6)
God, in love and mercy, forgives the penitent.
- Appeal (v1-3)
- Pleads for deliverance from chastisement; he does not deny that such is needed but pleads for mercy (Ps. 32:5; Luke 18:13-14; Heb. 12:6-7, 10).
- Sin had weakened him in soul and body (Ps. 32:3-4; 38:3-7. He recognized the magnitude and weight of his sin (Rom. 6:23). Does our sin cause us grief? Are we willing to humble ourselves before God?
- Anguish (v4-7)
- He recognizes sin separates from God but asks to be saved by the mercy of God (Isa. 59:1-2; Hab. 1:13).
- Sin had caused him to weep bitterly; grief had overtaken him (Luke 22:62; Matt. 5:4). Will we recognize only God can save and turn back to Him (Luke 15:17-19)?
- Assurance (v8-10)
- Notice the change as he is assured that God has heard his penitent cry (2 Cor. 7:9-10; 1 Pet. 3:12).
- His confidence is back and he can face life with a new hope because he has turned back to God and God has forgiven him (2 Chron. 7:14; Ps. 32:1-2; 130:1-4, 7; James 4:6-9).
- He also has new courage; he calls upon those that oppose him to be ashamed of their conduct and the course they are on for he knew the end thereof.
- Will we too have this assurance (1 Jn 1:7,9; Heb. 4:16)?
