Resolve To Pray (1 Timothy 2:1-8)
Paul is writing Timothy concerning the church (1 Tim. 3:14), but we can learn a few practical lessons about prayer for ourselves in these verses too.
- Make It A Priority (v1) – this is the first thing that Paul addresses; it is to be a priority in our lives as it was for Jesus, the apostles, early Christians, etc. (Matt. 6:33).
- Add Variety (v1) – different words are used in reference to prayer: supplication (expressing a need); prayers (broad/general term for prayers); intercessions (petitions/requests for others/draw near in confident conversation); and giving of thanks (gratitude).
- Expand the Scope (v1-2) – Our prayers are not to be narrowly focused but here included on behalf of themselves, all men, and those in authority; no one is outside the scope of those for whom we should pray.
- Keep Your Focus (v2-4) – our aim ultimately is not selfish ends of prosperity or comfort but that we might live faithfully, pleasing to God, and as examples to others.
- Remember the Avenue (v5-7) – It is through Christ we can approach unto God (John 14:6; Heb. 4:15-16), consider therefore the honor and privilege we have and use it confidently and regularly.
- Examine Your Attitude (v8) – Examine your posture, not of the body, but of the heart; we need to lead a clean life, have a loving/right attitude toward others especially in our petitions concerning them, and trust God.
