How A Woman Helped Evangelize A City (John 4)

How A Woman Helped Evangelize A City (John 4)

  1. She First Listened (4:7-26)
    • She had to have some spiritual interest; she investigated, asking questions and reflecting on what was said.
    • If we will be effective in taking the gospel into the world, we have to start with ourselves…we can’t teach others what we don’t know. Have we searched and asked questions (Acts 2:37, 8:36, 16:30, 17:11)? Have we believed that which we have heard (Hebrews 11:6; John 8:24)? Are we convicted (1 Peter 3:14-16)?
  2. She Told What She Had Heard (4:28-30)
    • There was much she did not yet know, she had just learned of Jesus—but still she could tell others what she did know. She invited others to learn what she did know and to learn alongside her.
    • We don’t have to know everything to tell people about Christ, but use what we do know (Acts 8:4, 10:33; 2 Timothy 2:2).
  3. She Pointed To Christ (4:39-42)
    • She invited others to come and see for themselves. There needed to be a faith in Christ, not in the woman.
    • So it should be with us, we are inviting others to see for themselves the truths of God (John 1:43-46; 1 Corinthians 2:1-5; 1 Thessalonians 2:13).
    • Like John’s statement that he must decrease (John 3:30)—we need to be reflectors pointing back to Christ (Matthew 28:18-20; Galatians 1:10; Colossians 1:10).
