Letter to Pergamos (Revelation 2:12-17)
A church should maintain doctrinal purity.
This congregation receives no criticism but is encouraged and reminded of the need for faithfulness in spite of trial.
- God Knows What We Endure (v13) – He knew their steadfastness even while surrounded by false worship and in the face of martyrdom. They were commended for not abandoning the faith (1 Cor. 16:13; 1 Pet. 4:16; Gal. 6:9).
- God Knows What We Support (v14-15) – While they had not denied the faith, they had not stood fast for it either. They had allowed certain errors to continue among them; thus they supported these things even by way of silence, but it was not overlooked by God (Heb. 4:12-13). Like the Corinthians, they needed to address the error among them (1 Cor. 5, esp. v6l ). They had a responsibility to defend the truth and fight against error (Eze. 3:18-21; 2 Thess. 3:6; Titus 1:9-11; Heb. 13:9; 1 John 4:1; 2 John 10-11; Titus 1:9-11; James 5:19-20).
- God Warns & Corrects (v16-17) – He wanted them to do right and enjoy eternity with Him but it required some correction (Heb. 12:5-11). If they continued as they were Je-sus would fight against them rather than for them (Matt. 12:30; 10:32-33).
