He Is Not Here: For He Is Risen (Matt. 28:5-6)

As Matthew concludes, he records the death and burial of Christ but also the joyous resurrection. Here we see the empty tomb which forever declares the:

  1. Reality of Jesus’ Death
    • He was crucified and had been there.
    • Matthew 27 records His trial before Pilate, being mocked of the Romans and the Jews, His crucifixion on the cross, and His burial in the tomb.
    • He tried to prepare His disciples for this time (16:21; 20:18-19, 28; 26:2, 28) which was foretold in the scriptures (1 Cor. 15:3; Acts 2:22-23; Isa. 53; etc.)
  2. Reality of Jesus’ Resurrection
    • He was no longer there, for he was risen, as He had said.
    • The tomb was now empty; they had made it as sure as they could (27:65-66) but the grave could not hold Him.
    • Again this had been taught by Jesus and was prophesied of (Rom. 1:4; Acts 2:24-32; Ps. 16:8-11).
  3. Reality of Jesus’ Reign
    • He was no more to die. Matthew states His resurrection as a fact, Paul goes further in 1 Corinthians 15:4 and indicates He was risen and would continue in that state.
    • He was raised to sit on His throne as Lord and Christ forever (Matt. 28:18-20; Acts 2:30-36; 1 Cor. 15:20; Phil. 2:8-11; Heb. 7:24-28; Rev. 1:17-18; ).

May we continue to weekly commemorate His death (1 Cor. 11:23-26) and daily live changed lives (Rom. 12:1-2).
