Delve Into God’s Word in 2012
In introducing the Bible Study Program I am encouraging you to follow this year, consider the charge that Paul gave to Timothy (2 Tim. 2:15) :
- Application—apply ourselves to the task,
- Timothy is to apply himself diligently in the work of God; required determination and purpose, not just a half-hearted approach.
- Such should characterize us as well in our service to God and our study of His Word.
- Approval—seek to be approved of God
- Like Paul, he should be concerned about pleasing God, not men (Acts 23:1; 2 Cor. 5:9-10; Rom. 2:16; Gal. 1:10; 1 Thess. 4:1) and being found faithful in His sight (1 Cor. 4:1-4; 2 Tim. 4:6-8).
- In our service to God and in our study of His Word, are we interested in pleasing men or God?
- Action—unashamed workman, rightly dividing
- The idea is of “holding a straight course in the word of truth” (ASV, margin).
- This is how Timothy could be approved of God; but it would take avoiding corrupt words (v14, 16-19) and instead following God’s Word and teaching it properly.
- This would take diligent study, application, and teaching of God’s Word; something we need as well (Acts 17:11; 1 Pet 2:2; 2 Pet 3:18; Jms 1:22)
Let us be diligently seeking to please God by our actions.
